<image:caption>As Physiotherapists, the most effective rehabilitation environments isn't always the clinic. The swimming pool can be a useful facility to utilise if possible. Water-based exercise or training, also known as aquatic therapy or hydrotherapy, can provide a supportive, low-impact environment that helps clients move with less discomfort, build strength, and regain confidence in their overall ability. Whether you’re recovering from injury, surgery, managing a chronic condition, or simply looking to stay active with less strain on your joints, aquatic exercise may be one of the most beneficial additions to your routine. If you’re looking for a low-impact, supportive, and effective way to build strength, mobility, and confidence in movement, aquatic exercise may be the ideal. As Physiotherapists, we often the use of water-based exercises as a bridge between early rehabilitation and full return to activity.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In many cases, most people experience some form of joint cracking or clicking without actual issues. Movement and exercise is often the best medicine for painless crepitus. However, it is ideal to plan an appointment with your GP or Physiotherapist if you experience crepitus accompanied by any of these "Red Flag" symptoms: Consistent Pain - May Indicate friction, inflammation, or damage to joint. Swelling - Can suggest active inflammation (e.g., flare-up of arthritis?). Locking or Catching - May indicate a loose body (bone fragment) within the joint or a meniscal tear (in the knee). Loss of Movement or Function - Difficulty weight bearing, mobilising, reduced range of motion, or joint instability.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | MSK Physio London - Different types of scans - Key Takeaways</image:title>
<image:caption>Most MSK problems don’t need a scan straight away — physiotherapy assessment is often enough. Scans can sometimes show “abnormalities” that are just normal age-related changes. The right scan, at the right time, can provide valuable information, especially when red flags are present or surgery is being considered. If you’re unsure whether you need a scan, talk to your Physiotherapist. They’ll guide you on whether imaging is necessary — or whether starting treatment is the best next step.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Suspected serious condition. If a serious underlying issue is noted, often called "red flags," a scan may be used to confirm or rule out the condition. Red flag symptoms (severe unexplained pain, night sweats, history of cancer, unexplained weight gain or loss). After trauma (suspected fracture, ligament, tendon tear, dislocation). Significant Neurological symptoms (numbness, tingling, weakness, loss of bladder/bowel control). Persistent or worsening symptoms. A scan may be considered if pain is not improving despite following physiotherapy. Assessing specific injuries. For certain injuries like significant ligament or tendon tears (ACL tear), a scan can help assess the severity of the damage. When conservative care has not helped and surgery is being considered.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | MSK Physio London - Do I Really Need a Scan? - Why Start with Physiotherapy?</image:title>
<image:caption>In many cases, a clinical diagnosis is all you need—helping you avoid unnecessary scans and delays in starting treatment. A Physiotherapist is trained to: Take a detailed medical history Perform a comprehensive physical examination Accurately identify the source of your pain This thorough assessment often provides all the information required, especially for common musculoskeletal problems such as muscle strains, sprains, back pain, neck pain, and joint injuries. Early movement and gentle strengthening can help recovery more than waiting weeks for a scan. If we note “Red Flags”, clients will be referred to look into the issues further (consultant, GP, Scans).</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | MSK Physio London - ACL Injury: Causes, Symptoms & Treatment - Treatment Options:</image:title>
<image:caption>Conservative Management: In some cases, especially for minor tears or partial ACL injuries, conservative treatments such as rest, ice, compression, and physiotherapy and rehabilitation may be sufficient. Physiotherapy aims to strengthen the muscles around the knee to provide better support and stability as well as working on the range of movement at the knee joint. Surgical Intervention: Complete ACL tears in majority cases require surgical reconstruction, especially for individuals who wish to return to sports or activities that involve pivoting and cutting movements at a high level. Rehabilitation: Whether treated conservatively or surgically, physiotherapy rehabilitation plays a crucial role in recovery. Rehabilitation focuses on restoring strength, flexibility, balance, and proprioception to the knee joint. It typically involves a structured program supervised by a physiotherapist with experience working with ACL injuries.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | MSK Physio London - Understanding Ankle Sprains - Ankle sprains are very common and usually occur when you twist, roll or turn your ankle in an awkward position. Following these motions - ligament tears can be noted causing an increase in pain, decreased range of movement and swelling or bruising. Our ligaments help stabilise our joints and can be found all around the body connecting bones to bones. Ligaments help our joints avoid excessive movements and therefore when a ligament is overstretched a tear can be noted.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog | MSK Physio London - Plantar Fasciitis - Overview & Physiotherapy - Diagnosis & Treatment</image:title>
<image:caption>As plantar fasciitis is a common condition it can be often diagnosed with a hands on assessment and clinical questioning. Symptoms are usually easy to identify and if required imaging such as X-Ray, MRI or an Ultrasound can be used to rule out any other condition for example - bony spurs or fractures. Treatments can include icing the painful area, wearing night splints to help stretch the calf and physiotherapy. Physiotherapy treatment and rehabilitation help relieve the pain in the short term by hands on techniques and these are followed by gentle strengthening and stretching exercises for the achilles, foot and ankle joint. Rest is also advised especially when the individual is standing or walking for prolonged periods of time. Wearing supportive/cushioned shoes or trainers can also help relive the stress on the plantar fascia as the arch will be supported and the pressure is distributed more evenly across the foot.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Freezing Stage – Moving the shoulder becomes painful and restriction in shoulder range of movement is noted. Frozen Stage – Decreased pain can be noted however movement becomes more difficult as the joint is stiffer and overall function is limited. Thawing Stage – The pain levels and overall range of movement at the shoulder joint begin to improve.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | MSK Physio London - Frozen Shoulder: Overview & Treatment - Improving Range of Movement, Pain & Function - Treatment (Non-Surgical)</image:title>
<image:caption>Frozen shoulder symptoms (pain, stiffness and decreased range of movement) tend to improve over time, however these symptoms can take up to three years to settle. The main focus of treatment for frozen shoulder is to control pain intensity and frequency, and restore function and movement throughout stretching, mobility and strengthening exercises. Physiotherapy is one of the most common referral pathways for clients with frozen shoulder as exercise rehabilitation and gentle hands on treatment can be performed to relive pain and improve function. Exercises can include range of movement and stretching followed by gentle strengthening as symptoms allow.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | MSK Physio London - Knee Replacement - Overview, Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation - Anatomy</image:title>
<image:caption>The knee joint is made up of the thigh bone (femur), shin bone (tibia) and kneecap (patella). These three bones are covered by articular cartridge which provides smooth movement throughout the knee joint. The knee joint is also covered by the synovial membrane which helps with joint lubrication for the cartilage by releasing fluids to reduce joint friction. The two shock absorbers known as the meniscus are located between the femur and tibia bones. These “C” shaped menisci provide cushion for the knee joint. Ligaments around the knee joint include: anterior cruciate (ACL), posterior cruciate (PCL), medial collateral (MCL) and lateral collateral (LCL) ligaments. These ligaments provide stability and support for the knee. In a normal and healthy knee joint all the structures mentioned above work together to provide natural function. Therefore if one or more of these structures are injured or damaged, the client may feel pain or have reduced range of movement.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog | MSK Physio London - Knee Replacement - Overview, Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation - Preparation For Knee Replacement</image:title>
<image:caption>Before having surgery it is important to perform pre-operative rehabilitation. Staying active will help maintain knee joint strength and range of movement which will aid in recovery following the operation. Clients should try to stay as active as they can. Pre-operative physiotherapy would be recommended as gentle strengthening and mobility exercises will be provided by specialists to help prepare the client for surgery which will also aid in recovery following surgery. Other forms of activity which would be beneficial include walking, swimming or walking in a pool.</image:caption>
